Demarcus Dobbs, an end, is the only “shoo-in” to start, according to Richt. DeAngelo Tyson has been working at end as well as tackle.

Redshirt freshman Kwame Geathers has had a good camp, allowing for the possibility of him playing tackle and moving Tyson to end. Abry Jones and Brandon Wood are also competing for time at end.

Richt all wet

The Bulldogs had their annual diving competition at the campus swim center, skipping practice due to rainy weather.

They will practice today instead.

Richt dove from the highest level, as he does every year. But this time he did it in his street clothes — because of the late change in plans he hadn’t packed his swim trunks.

“I didn’t expect him to do it with his clothes on,” linebacker Cornelius Washington said.

Smith speaks, sort of

Branden Smith didn’t want to go into details about the academic issues that kept him out of eight practices. The sophomore cornerback, who returned to the field Thursday, kept saying “3.4,” apparently in reference to his grade point average.

“That’s all I can say right now,” Smith said.

Smith is one of the team’s most dynamic players. He is competing with Vance Cuff for a starting corner spot, returns kicks and can play offense on some packages, something he’d like to keep doing. But he wasn’t sure if that was still on tap.

“I don’t really ask, to tell you the truth,” he said. “I would love to play offense. I would love to help the team out. That’s what I’m all about.”

Scholarship awarded

Josh Sailors, a junior fullback from Athens, is a walk-on no more. The graduate of Oconee County High School was given a scholarship, the team announced.

Sailors, a 5-foot-9, 230-pounder, has not appeared in a game in four seasons.

He is the fifth walk-on to be awarded a scholarship this year.

(From AJC correspondent Andy Johnston in Athens:)

Dexter Morant, the freshman linebacker who quit the Georgia football team on Tuesday, rejoined the Bulldogs today.

Coach Mark Richt said Morant called him on Friday and asked if he could return to the team.

Richt said he conferred with defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and the senior players before agreeing to let Morant return.

Morant participated on a limited basis in today’s practice.

Morant, a 6-foot-7, 240-pounder from Manning, S.C., signed with Georgia in February. He did not practice Monday, the Bulldogs’ first day of preseason camp, and told Richt the next day that he was leaving the team.

But since then, Richt said today, Morant had sent text messages to several players indicating he made a mistake by leaving.

Coming out of high school, Morant was rated the nation’s No. 15 defensive-end prospect by Rivals.com, No. 44 by Scout.com and No. 73 by ESPN.com. He projects as an outside linebacker in Georgia’s 3-4 defensive scheme.

In other news today, wide receiver Rantavious Wooten has a sprained left knee. Richt said he expects Wooten to be sidelined for a couple of weeks.

For more on Morant’s return and other notes from Saturday’s practice, click here.

Are you ready for some Dawgs football? (AJC staff)

Well, a week from the moment I’m writing this my wife and I will be strolling down Lumpkin Street on our way to Sanford Stadium for the the Dogs’ season opener.

I’ve never understood those folks who are still showing up after the game has started; I like to get to the stadium about an hour before kickoff so I can chat with the other fans who sit around me, soak up the game day atmosphere, watch the players warm up and get on my feet and yell as the Redcoats strike up “Krypton Fanfare” and the team walks toward the east end zone.

A friend asked me yesterday if I still get excited about the first game of the season after all these years and I said that while the prospect of seeing the Dogs play Louisiana-Lafayette might not have me at a fever pitch, the answer is definitely yes.

My pulse still quickens as I turn the corner onto the Sanford Drive bridge and the stadium looms over me. I still get a surge of adrenalin on hearing the first strains of Bulldog music from the Redcoat Band. And when that lone trumpeter gets up in the southwest corner of the upper deck and plays the opening strains of the “Battle Hymn of the Bulldog Nation,” a chill literally still goes down my spine.

As I wrote five years ago Sunday when the very first Junkyard Blawg post was published, I’m a lifelong Dog, born and raised in Athens, and I don’t remember a time when the Bulldogs weren’t an everyday part of my consciousness.

What a wonderful part of my life UGA has been.

As my brother Jon, a former Redcoat, likes to say, “Once a Dawg, always a Dawg … how sweet it is!”

QUICK HITS

"Caesar Dawgustus" in downtown Athens. (Weletthedawgsout.org)

Steve Spurrier raised a lot of eyebrows with the Gamecocks depth chart released Friday. At quarterback, it said Stephen Garcia OR Connor Shaw, the latter a true freshman. Count me among those who figure the Ball Coach is just playing mind games with Garcia — and, perhaps, with opponents. When the Dogs come to town the second week of the season, I think there’s absolutely no chance they’ll see South Carolina starting a true freshman at quarterback instead of the talented but erratic Garcia. … If you’ve visited Athens since 2003, you’ve seen those colorfully decorated fiberglass bulldogs stationed all around town as part of the We Let the Dawgs Out program sponsored by a local woman’s club. Now The Athens Banner-Herald reports you can bid in an online auction for one of those statues, which you’re welcome to leave sitting on public display or take home for your own as of Oct. 2. About 22 of the 40 statues, including “Caesar Dawgustus,” who sits on College Avenue downtown, are already sponsored and likely will stay where they are, the report says, but others will go up for auction on eBay as of Sept. 18, with proceeds to be donated to AIDS Athens. Of course, before you plan on taking one home and parking it in your front yard, you might want to check with your neighbors. … Speaking of bulldogs, a friend who raises them passes along a gossip update about the search for a new Uga mascot. He says that two different all-white males in the Uga bloodline who are old enough to serve now as mascot have been offered to the university, but Sonny Seiler, who has overseen the mascots since the 1950s, rejected the offers. Seiler reportedly has identified an all-white Uga relation who’s likely to be Uga VIII, but not until midway through the season, meaning interim mascot Russ will reign at least until then. (I still think if he’s undefeated come homecoming, Russ might get to stick around for the whole season.) My friend says that anyone who gets a pup in the Uga line has to sign a contract in which Seiler gets first pick of any all-white male offspring. (No, he doesn’t personally have all the prospective Ugas running around his Savannah home.) There are also restrictions that prevent owners of the dogs from publicizing the fact that they have an Uga relation or from cashing in on that connection. After all these years, Seiler has his territory well marked, it seems.

Athens–It was a typical Larry Munson greeting.

He didn’t say “Hello.”

He didn’t say “How you doing?”

He just started talking.

“Tell me about the quarterback. I’m worried about the quarterback,” said Munson.

Okay, get the picture: It is August. Georgia’s first game is still almost a month away. And Larry Munson is already worried. Man, is he worried.

Munson retired as the radio voice of the Georgia Bulldogs two games into the 2008 season. He was the heartbeat of the Bulldog Nation for almost 43 years. He doesn’t miss the travel one bit. But he misses the rest of it more than he can possibly explain. He really misses those Friday night dinners with his radio crew when he would hold court with story after story about life on the road in the SEC. Remember that Larry called Vanderbilt games for 19 years before he came to Georgia in 1966. That’s over 60 years of road games in this league. I don’t think Larry would mind my telling you that some very good wine was consumed.

“I’ve never laughed so hard before–or since,” said Chuck Dowdle, the former Channel 2 anchor who would join the fun.

“Sure, you miss all that stuff but hey, you get old,” said Munson, who turns 88 in September. “And I’m damned old.”

Since Larry and I did a book together last year (more on that later) a lot of people ask me how he’s doing. I tell them that for an 87-year old guy who’s had his share of physical ailments, including brain surgery to remove a clot in 2008, Larry is holding up pretty well. It’s tougher for him to get around.

But it sure hasn’t slowed down his ability to worry about his beloved Bulldogs.

“I’ve seen film of the kid (Aaron Murray) and he looks like he can play,” said Munson. “But we had to let the other guy (backup quarterback Zach Mettenberger) go when he got into trouble. And now we have a true freshman (Hutson Mason) as the backup? Is that right? Can we go to Columbia (on Sept. 11) with a redshirt freshman and a true freshman? Do you realize what a dog fight it is going to be up there?”

I reminded Larry that it was not an unprecedented situation. Georgia went to Tennessee in 2001 and won (26-24) when David Greene, a redshirt freshman, drove the Bulldogs down the field and threw a touchdown pass to Verron Haynes with only five seconds left. That’s when Larry did his famous “Hobnail Boot” call that remains his favorite, even to this day.

“Ah, Greene,” Munson recalled. “Big Kid. Smooth. Never got too excited. Man, if Murray can be like Greene then maybe we got a shot.”

Larry probably won’t be in Sanford Stadium for a game this fall. He felt like he said his goodbyes when he was honored during the Georgia Tech game in November of 2008. But he’ll be watching on the big screen at home and worrying. And nobody, absolutely nobody, can worry like Larry Munson.

“What are we going to do about the defense? We couldn’t stop anybody last year,” he said. ”What do you know about the new guy (defensive coordinator Todd Grantham)? Does he understand what the SEC is all about? Does he realize how hard it is to play on the road in this league? Does he understand that it’s going to be NINE THOUSAND degrees up there? There is no place on earth hotter than Columbia, South Carolina!”

I try to get by to see Larry whenever I’m in Athens. I was there this day to get him to sign some books and to catch up because it had been a while. Then was time to go. Larry doesn’t really stand on formality at times like this.

“Okay, see ya. I’m still worried about the damned quarterback.”

Larry still watches a lot of college football but it’s not the same when you’re not emotionaly invested in the day-to-day comings and goings of a team. But college football, specifically Georgia football, misses Larry, too. It just isn’t the same without him.

Shamless plug: Last year I worked with Larry to produce his autobiography “From Herschel to a Hobnail Boot.” If you’re interested in the book (and the CD of great calls that goes with it), please go to my website and check it out. You can order it from there:
